About Mimi

My name is Mimi Demissie and I'm from Jihur, a town in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. I love the Amharic language, and nothing makes me happier than watching a student go from complete beginner to speaking confidently with Ethiopians around the world.

After years of teaching, I realised how few quality resources existed for learners. So I wrote Amharic with Mimi to give my students something clear, practical, and reliable to learn from.

I've taught students from more than 25 nationalities, including professionals at the UN, the World Bank, and universities across Europe and the US.

In their own words

She understands my goals, recognises my strengths and weaknesses, and adapts the lessons to the way I learn best.

Racheal van Damme Dutch · Policy Officer

She guides the student patiently yet confidently through every step, making very difficult grammar intelligible even to the less talented student.

Diego Maria Malara Italian · PhD Researcher

I could never have become professionally proficient in Amharic, been able to hold meetings in the language and read BBC Amharic without her.

Alfredo Manfredini Böhm Deputy Country Director · Tony Blair Institute

What I value most is that it's never just textbook drilling: I can now write a birthday message, express condolences, or send a travel update to friends in the Ethiopian community and actually mean what I'm saying.
